Binghamton-based credit union merges with Syracuse institution

Horizons Federal Credit Union is now part of the larger Empower Federal Credit Union, based in Syracuse.

Horizons, headquartered in Binghamton, with Empower took effect on Monday.

About 75 percent of Horizons members who voted on the merger plan in July supported the move.

Horizons, as a division of Empower, will continue to operate offices in Binghamton, Endwell and Vestal. An Empower office on Harry L. Drive in Johnson City is now identified as a Horizons unit.

Mario DiFulvio, who was President and CEO of Horizons, is now Regional Vice President of Empower.

In a statement, DiFulvio said he thanked members “for their patience during this transition.”

We are delighted to provide our members with the products and services that many demand. We remain committed to being the friendliest credit union in the region.

Horizons has approximately 12,000 members and employs around 30 people. DiFulvio said no jobs will be lost due to the merger.

Horizons was founded as the US Employees Federal Credit Union. Its name was changed to Horizons in 1999.
